The Art Institute of Philadelphia Library
is located on the lower level of 1610 Chestnut Street
(The Annex). The Library's collection of over 30,000
volumes includes over 3000 Videos and DVDs, print
subscriptions to 160+ periodicals, and several online
databases. Our online catalog, Athena, can be accessed
through computers on the intranet. Online databases,
electronic journals, and other resources are linked
to this website.
We are partners in the educational experience. Please
utilize these excellent resources and encourage your students
to do so. |
CIRCULATION OF MATERIALS
Teachers may borrow any library materials with the
exception of textbooks. If necessary, textbooks may be
borrowed for the duration of one class period. Teachers
are limited to five items borrowed for personal use.
Loan periods are:
| - Books |
3 weeks |
| - Videos/DVDs: |
1 week |
| - Reference and Reserve materials: |
Overnight |
| - Journals: |
4 hours |
All materials, unless they are reserved for someone else,
can be renewed. Special arrangements can be made for longer
loan periods if necessary. Also, you can book materials
for particular days or weeks during the quarter, to correspond
with your syllabus. This is particularly useful if you
are planning to show a videocassette on a certain date.
Please see a librarian to arrange for bookings.
Faculty members are not charged fines for overdue materials.
We do, however, expect you to return materials in a timely
manner. Faculty members are charged replacement costs
for lost or damaged materials.
Overdue notices are sent out at least once a quarter.
Please respond to these notices! Library materials are
meant to be shared.

RESERVE MATERIALS
Teachers are welcome to put books or
other materials - either their own or the Library's -
on Reserve for their students. We encourage the use of
the Reserve service as it guarantees that all students
will have access to materials for your courses. Please
see a librarian to put materials on Reserve.
You should be aware that textbooks for AIPH classes
are automatically put on Reserve behind the Circulation
desk. They may be checked out by students for "in
Library use" and are not allowed to leave the library.

SPECIAL DELIVERY SERVICE FOR 2300 BUILDING
Because it may be inconvenient for teachers from the
2300 Building to visit the Library regularly, it is possible
to request that Library materials be sent to you and returned
via interoffice mail. When requesting materials to be
sent to 2300, please speak to one of the librarians directly
so that we can verify that the requested materials are
on the shelf.
Interoffice mail has been reliable for this process and
the mail goes out daily. Please plan ahead when making
requests for this service so that we have enough time
to get the materials to you. |

INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES
The Library offers
specialized instruction on the use of Library
resources for you and your students. Students who learn
to use the Library resources will write better papers
and produce better projects. Instruction takes place in many ways using a variety of teaching methods. These may include but are not limited to, providing:
-pathfinders and webliographies designed to support various disciplines;
-advice to individuals during the reference interview process;
-in-depth research consultations and appointments;
-individualized instruction;
-group instruction in library or classrooms.
